Just before Christmas sometime in the early '50s my parents sent my brother and me to the movies on a Saturday afternoon. When we returned to the house there was music coming from the living room. Our family gift that year was a television! And emanating from the miniscule speaker was Amahl and the Night Visitors. I will never forget it.
Thank you, Mr. Menotti, for your operas. Although you left us today, your music will live on.

I love the way your parents surprised you! They obviously were opera lovers.
I grew up listening to "Live from the Met" every Saturday on the radio with my Dad. One year when we were both a lot older, the traveling Met company came to Madison and I bought tickets for the two of us for all 3 performances: Tosca & Carmen were two but don't remember the third. I remember Carmen stomped out her cigarette with bare feet and the audience gasped!
